What is an Accessible Golf Course? |
| Our golf course is a
state-of-the-art, absolutely beautiful 18-hole golf facility that is
open, and challenging, to everyone. The patented design allows the
course to be fully accessible to all players and spectators, and it is
environmentally sensitive in design and management. Each Accessible
Golf Course bears witness to the inherent beauty of the state, county,
and city in which it is located, and offers an exciting and formidable
challenge to all golfers, at all levels of ability.
The National
Accessible Golf Course is the first of its kind not only in the United
States, but in the world!
From the parking lot, into the
Clubhouse/Wellness Center, to the practice range and putting green, in
all the tee areas, through all the fairways and hazards, and including
all the greens, complete accessibility is achieved by topographical
considerations, use of state-of-the-art turf surfaces in strategic
areas, and creative hazard design and placement. Blind golfers will be
able to enjoy our courses, as the greens are equipped with sound
emitting devices and audible descriptions of each hole are provided at
every tee area.

"I've seen
disabled people come out here [to an adaptive golf workshop] who think
they couldn't hit a golf ball, or do anything leisurely or
recreationally. Then they hit that first ball and it's like a whole new
world has opened up to them."

Multi-use and total mix is what this
facility is all about. Accordingly, there will be no typical clubhouse
at our Accessible Golf Course. But there will be a
clubhouse/rehabilitation/ therapy/fitness/wellness center! In addition
to housing the traditional golf facilities, the Clubhouse/Wellness
Center is expanded to include the most current physical therapy,
fitness, and rehabilitation equipment such as: exercise bicycles,
recumbent bikes, upper body ergometers, stair steppers, Versa climbers,
Kinetrons, Keiser air-controlled strength equipment, Cybex selectorized
weight stacks, and aquatic therapy devices like whirlpools and
underwater treadmills.
The professionals on hand, including physicians, physical therapists,
masseuses, athletic trainers, and fitness specialists, have expertise in
teaching and assisting in the use of equipment, and designing and
monitoring individualized rehabilitation and fitness programs, part of
which may include the use of the Accessible Golf Course itself!
Services offered at the Clubhouse/Wellness center include health
evaluations (aerobic capacity, muscular strength, body composition,
flexibility, etc.), cardiovascular and strength training, intensity
level monitoring, sports specific rehabilitation, and instruction on
injury prevention, nutrition, and other health related topics.
Just like our golf course, the Clubhouse/Wellness Center is open and
available to everyone, and accessible to persons with a broad range of
disabilities. The Accessible Golf Course, the Clubhouse/Wellness
center, and other on-site, all-inclusive recreational facilities will
complement each other and reinforce our theme of integration and
inclusion. |

"The game of
golf seems ideally suited as a means for putting purpose back into lives
so heavily impacted by change. Golf is a very adaptable sport. As an
activity, it affords a wide range of choices -- to go all out, or just
take it slow and easy. And the rewards are often rich and meaningful.
People can become active again through participation in sports...and
they can have fun. There's no greater sport to have fun with than
golf!"
